Societal breakdown is in the air at this season’s Wind Challenge 2 at Fleisher Art Memorial.  The three artists–Erin Riley, Anita Allyn and Laura Ledbetter–take very different approaches in the newest iteration of this revered series of juried art shows, dating back to 1978.

Cate and I went to the Vox building the Saturday after First Friday (which is usually a great day to go — mostly, the audio-video-robo works will be functioning; and often artists are lurking who will talk with you about what they’re up to).  We found a bunch of good stuff at Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Napoleon and Vox Populi. Weekly Update – Deconstructing image, Wall Space at PPAC

Virgil Marti’s sculptures “Night Watch” and “Vesper” stand like sentinels at the entrance to the Philadelphia Photo Art Center with a kind of haunted-castle grandeur. The 6-foot, 80-pound slabs are shaped like ornate mirrors one might find in Snow White’s stepmom’s bedroom; instead of glass and foil, though, they’re made of rough plywood plated in chrome. They reflect a dull sheen from a nearby window, but no clear images—it’s a standoff between viewer and mirror in which Narcissus loses, and a perfect greeting to Wall Space, a great little show about image.

Cut Up and Newly Pasted

“Cut&Paste” is an exhibit about collage and reinvention. Images, both still and video, are taken out of their context and manipulated into something new: a reflection of the artists’ own imagination. Five artists, Anita Allyn, Ellie Brown, Kent Latimer, Eric Lendl, and Caroline Shields participated in the exhibit at Falling Cow Gallery. Ellie Brown’s Found Book Collages Ellie Brown’s found book collages tell a story about her sexuality. Minty fresh as paint at Vox

by Anita Allyn I don’t have time to write a real post, but I wanted to squeeze in a word about Minty at Vox. It’s the new members group show, that includes a returning member, M.Ho, as well as truly new members Anita Allyn, Leah Bailis, Micah Danges, Sarah Gamble, M. Ho, Roxana Perez-Mendez and Joseph Protheroe. All the work looked pretty snappy, but Anita Allyn’s video installation and mural were what I brought home with me in mind, a wall supergraphic of a sunset and road with a video inset where the sun would be.
