New Philly Ink – Young printmakers at The Brandywine Workshop
The Brandywine Workshop clearly holds a special place in the Philadelphia art community. The organization has a long history of promoting emerging artists, engaging in institutional collaboration with local universities, and bringing established artists to Philadelphia for residencies. Brandywine Workshop’s latest exhibition, New Philly Ink (which closed on Feb. 8th), showcased the thriving Philadelphia printmaking culture and highlighted the great art that is to be presented in upcoming exhibitions. Edgar Heap of Birds’ signs and a lecture at Temple Contemporary
This past Thursday, Tyler School of Art alum, Edgar Heap of Birds (b.1954) presented a fascinating lecture about art and life to a huge crowd in Temple Contemporary Gallery. An internationally recognized artist, Heap of Birds’ conceptual art employs text, abstraction, and installation to reference his Native American identity and culture, or other global indigenous cultures. Heap of Birds is a professor of art and Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Full Spectrum–Brandywine Workshop prints at PMA
Full Spectrum, the exhibit of prints from the Brandywine Workshop that opened this month at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, shows off one of those little-sung organizations that quietly do amazing work here in Philadelphia. Here’s a bit of history–The Brandywine Workshop, founded in Philadelphia in 1972 to encourage and support racial and cultural diversity in printmaking, gifted 100 of its prints representing 89 artists to the PMA three years ago in memory of Anne d’Harnoncourt. Weekly Update – First Friday roundup
This week’s Weekly has my December First Friday roundup. Copy below with a few pictures. “Slo Mo” at Germ Books and Gallery is a valedictory exhibit celebrating three now-defunct artist collectives— Pifas , Bobo’s on 9th and the Philadelphia Athenaeum . The group show, curated by Pifas member April Glaser , has colorful and psychedelic works by artists affiliated with the three spaces. It will hardly be a sob-fest.
