‘Yves Klein: With the Void, Full Powers’ at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington

Anyone concerned with contemporary or post WWII art should get to Washington by Sept. 12 to see this exhibition. Yves Klein is an essential figure in post war art whose work resonates through much of what followed: happenings, performance (and films of performance), installations,  minimal and conceptual art.  For a current generation of young artists making their way in a world shadowed by the threat of environmental annihilation, his work will have particular resonance.

Temporariness

The Centre Pompidou, located in the heart of Paris, was originally conceived as a temporary structure in 1977. Though it has become a permanent  and thriving cultural hub the Pompidou’s original temporary identity  remains intact as witnessed by  the current installation of cardboard – based works by the Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata on the centre’s facade.

Lynda Benglis produced a series of work, beginning in 1968, that upset contemporary notions of what was acceptable as high art: forms that appeared soft and oozing when art was supposed to be rigid and geometric; polychrome and even fluorescent when the prevailing color was gray; sparkle-y when such effects were associated with ballroom dancing and parade costumes.

My find at the Marche aux puces — a cigar band collage plate Staying in the 14th arrondissement near the end of the #4 Metro line was nice. It’s not a touristy part of town and feels like a real neighborhood. Among other things we were very near the market street Rue Daguerre and a short walk away from the marche aux puces (flea market) at Porte de Vanves.
