News Controversy regarding NYTimes critic Ken Johnson’s recent reviews of “Now Dig This! News For its 23rd year, the Institute of Contemporary Art is combining the annual Day With(out) Art with World AIDS Day, December 1, 2012. This year, Philadelphia HIV/AIDS and LGBQT activist join Penn undergraduate students for a lineup of programs including ribbon-making and film screenings. The Ribbon Bee, held from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM at 118 South 36th Street, is accompanied by speakers such as artist-activists Joy Episalla and Carrie Yamaoka (who are also participants in the roundtable discussions accompanying the film screenings). Behind the scenes of art making – This is the last weekend for 2012 Philadelphia Open Studio Tours
THIS MONTH, Philadelphia Open Studio Tours has opened the doors to 300 studios and art venues in neighborhoods across the city, allowing visitors to go behind the scenes and see where the work gets made and how the tools get used. In 1999, POST began with a network of 13 artists. It’s grown so large it now spans two October weekends (Oct. 6-7 and Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21). Out of Bounds – artists on nature at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education
The group show at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, hosted by the SCEE and the Center for Emerging Visual Artists presents a wide range of pieces by seven different artists, all inspired by nature and intended to elicit reflection on our interaction and relationship with the natural. Out of Bounds commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Schuylkill Center’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic, which treats and rehabilitates thousands of animals per year. News West Collection launches $300,000 art acquisition project–$100,000 set aside for Philly artists It was all about money outside City Hall the other day as Occupy Phladelphia protested economic issues; and it was all about money inside, too, when Paige West, with Mayor Nutter by her side, announced plans for a $300,000 arts acquisition project on the part of the West Collection, with $100,000 earmarked for Philadelphia artists. “West Collects” has no fee to apply, and the winners will be selected in April 2012. Diverse Meanderings at CFEVA and Tiger Strikes Asteroid
There is a smorgasbord of styles at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists right now. The show, entitled Beyond Abstraction, was assembled by visiting curator Katrin Elia and consists of eight artists with mediums as wide-ranging as video and encaustic to fabric and wood. With such disparity even within the realm of abstractions, it is necessary to focus on a few aspects of the show.

While trailing all the hot spots that Roberta visited the week before (23 Degrees at the Ice Box and Naked Paper at Tower Gallery) I picked up some bits of info worth sharing. On the business side, the enormous Crane Arts Building is fully rented out as of Sept. 1, co-owner Nick Kripal said when I bumped into him at the CFEVA 23 Degrees exhibit. Wow!!!
