Saturday this and that

Here’s a short list of four great and interesting things from the inbox. PAPERGIRL PROJECT GIVES AWAY ART IN NEW YORK CITY This one is close to my heart since it’s an art giveaway. PaperGirl out of Berlin organizes giveaways of real art to complete strangers on the streets of a busy city. PaperGirl is now in New York state — they did a project in Albany and they’re organizing for a fall event in New York city.  If you want to participate, PaperGirl NYC is looking for submissions of your real art (due Aug 1) — art can be any ... Beautiful and not in New York

We dithered and waffled on what to see in our day trip to New York last week finally settling on shows in Chelsea and Soho that talked to our concerns about beauty in contemporary art. Beauty is back of course.  That’s nothing any observer of the scene has missed by now, with gorgeous public art by Anish Kapoor and the embrace of beauty in even the most tetchy conceptual realms (Kara Walker). Through You, at the University of Pennsylvania, is from the Martin Z. Margulies collection, widely acknowledged as one of the top collections in the country (I can’t find who ranked it, alas). (The previous Miami big photo collection exhibit, from Dennis Scholl, ... More » »

I Dated Cindy Sherman

As part of Molly’s job, she was letting me know about an article in Salon about Paul H-O’s film I Dated Cindy Sherman, which screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. The article’s a great read. Plus there’s an interview with Paul at the end, plus a video excerpt of him talking. All I have to say is no one comes off super well, not Sherman, not H-O. (As you ... More » »
