The great society at Little Berlin and Basekamp

Little Berlin and Basekamp, part of my First Friday route, were both you-had-to-be-there moments, something quite different from a quiet gallery visit in the middle of the week. Little Berlin‘s exhibit, Offerings, is made of works created by small groups of four people collaborating together. The total number of participants at play–71 participants in 20 groups–was pretty amazing. Little Berliners Alex Gartelmann and Martha Savery mixed and matched group members for the most part, so participants barely knew or didn’t at all know their collaborators. Little Berlin, once again, is reaching out beyond their core group and finding lots of ... More » »

First Friday ramble

Beth Brandon, Clearing, 8.5″ x 11″, 2008We headed out to Old City and Chinatown last Friday and saw some stuff worth seeing. TOPSTITCH Beth Brandon‘s show at Topstitch was our first stop. Her small eco-drawings showed a seriousness of purpose with their intense mark-making. The woodsy iconography floating on a sea of white is familiar (Justin Witte, Ben Volta, Robyn O’Neil, etc) but the dreaminess and the fashion sensibility (a series of drawings show a line of balaclavas made from leaves) give it a little surprise. Brandon will be in a two-person show at Copy Gallery in September. That show’s ... More » »

Two places at once-Damian Weinkrantz

Piano drawing by Damian Weinkrantz at his Bean Cafe show called “Dead Piano Place,” opening tonight (May 9) artblog pal Damian Weinkrantz wrote recently that he was having a show at Bean Cafe on South St. between 6th and 7th, home of many great art shows. That show opens tonight with many festivities including an after party at the Khyber with AJW doing the DJ duties. Oh and by the way he is also having a show at the Last Drop coffee house on 13th and Pine. So is that a first — two, two, two cafe shows at once? ... More » »

Browsing Old City and Bainbridge’s new art corridor

One of Damian Weinkrantz’s politically-transcendant owls at Honeymilk Stella and I went around to a couple of boutiques two Saturdays ago. Nowadays that can mean an encounter with art as well as an eyeful of blue jeans, dresses and jewelry. Honeymilk, in Vagabond‘s back space on 3rd St. in Old City has been keeping up an art presence with changing exhibits every few months. Carrie Powell, who I believe is Honeymilk’s proprietor, curated a show for June and July that includes owl portraits by Emily Glaubinger and Damian Weinkrantz. The portraits are nicely done, and they’re all framed and hung ... More » »
