The Nature of Contemporary Illustration at the Delaware Art Museum
When an illustration show opens in Delaware, chances are that it is somehow related to Howard Pyle, arguably one of Wilmington’s most famous artists. In 1882, Vincent van Gogh wrote that Pyle’s sketches in Harper’s Monthly struck him “dumb with admiration.” In the 21st century, Pyle’s reputation remains intact: he is still widely known as “the father of American illustration.” The Delaware Art Museum’s exhibition, State of the Art: Illustration 100 Years After Howard Pyle attempts to examine Pyle’s legacy through a cross-section of illustration from the past century. News The Delaware Art Museum began its outstanding centennial celebration in November 2011, and is now preparing to conclude with the 2012 Centenniel Juried Exhibition on October 20. Including a vast number of artists artists living either in Delaware or within 100 miles of the Museum, the Centennial is guest-juried by John B. Ravenal, the Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. News The Delaware Art Museum’s Centennial juried show is not until October, but the Museum has released the entire list of artists who have been selected, including many from Pennsylvania. Congratulations to all! The museum used to host biennial regional exhibitions that were much admired. We hope this juried exhibition revitalizes the regional biennial, which is missed. Juror John Ravenal says, of the selection: “The 1,300 artworks submitted online by nearly 450 applicants covered a wide range of media, styles, and abilities. News – Craft fair on Rittenhouse Square, 3rd Ward seeks restaurant, Leeway awards and more!
News First ever PA Guild of Craftsmen fair at Rittenhouse Rittenhouse Square is the location of a fine arts fair every year but it’s never (to our knowledge) held a fine crafts fair. This Spring (May 11-13), Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen will host their fine craft fair in the park. More than 140 fine craftsmen and artisans from around the state and nation will show and sell handmade jewelry, furniture, pottery, clothing and other crafted items.

News Lucien Freud dies at 88 Painter Lucian Freud – grandson of Sigmund Freud – died on July 20 in London at age 88. Copious commentary everywhere for this master portraitist and figure painter. The Washington Post obituary is is a good overview of the artist’s story.

The Cult of Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement 1860-1900, through July 17 at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is perhaps most interesting for emphasizing that the Pre-Raphaelites set out to make their living space a Gesamptkunstwerk, complete with paintings, furniture, wallpaper, decorative objects and artistically-clad women, who clearly were part of the decoration; hence the exhibition includes all facets of fine and decorative arts, including photography, printed books and rarely-seen items of jewelry and clothing.
