Matthew Suib Cocked for action in BrooklynVideographer Matthew Suib, just opened Saturday in Brooklyn at Smack Mellon, 92 Plymouth St., 718.834.8761. His video Cocked is included in the exhibition Infinitu et Contini, curated by Denise Carvahlo. The show runs through Dec. 30. The exhibit is supported by a huge bunch of grants, included money from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Andy Warhol Foundation. I just saw Cocked again at Moore College of Art and Design in the exhibit Facts, Fantasies, and Fictions: Christian Curiel, Sarah McEneaney, Matthew Suib), and projected large and wide, in a ... A lot of openings in the last two weekends. I didn’t make them all but I’m going to run some pictures here with some links and say get out there and look around. So much to see so little time. PAFA, Oct. 19, 2006 Libby and I made it to the opening of Steven Power‘s show in PAFA‘s Morris Gallery but didn’t make Space is the Place (Outgoing PAFA Contemporary Art Curator Alex Baker‘s co-curated show also at PAFA). It’s up for a while and sounds good so we’ll be back for sure. Steve Powers, right, and Brian Campbell, doing ... More » »
First Friday was swell, and apparently, it was a good thing we went at 5, because we heard reports later that the galleries and streets of Old City were brimming with art lovers. Here are some pix from what we saw. Joseph Hu used his own hair for the bristles in his replica of his grandfather’s brush for clearing off eraser debris. It was one of a number of wonderful personal items he created for his first solo show at Pentimenti Gallery. Another outstanding piece was a replica of a shirt. But I loved each and every piece. Hu has ... More » »
from Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y by Belgian artist Johan Grimonprez, screening at the new SCREENING gallery.Look for Philadelphia’s newest gallery, opening Friday. It’s called SCREENING, run by Matthew Suib and Nadia Hironaka, who say it’s the only gallery dedicated to the exhibition of innovative and challenging works of art on film and video. For its inaugural exhibition, Screening presents Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y by Belgian artist Johan Grimonprez. Produced in 1997, Grimonprez’ comprehensive and prescient chronology of worldwide airline hijackings combines documentary imagery with narration inspired by Don DeLillo’s White Noise and Mao II to “highlight the value of the spectacular in our catastrophe ... The Gilbert Building aflame in Purified by Fire, Matthew Suib’s video installation there last month. The lights are going dim soon at the Gilbert Building, home of the Fabric Workshop, Vox Populi, and more. And Nexus has been forced to vacate its long-time Old City space. In the spirit of partying while Rome burns, these places are offering First Friday parties, to mark final shows and optimistic beginnings. Here’s the scoop: A Fab Farewell They’re going to need a hell of a big U-Haul to move all the art that’s part of the Fabric Workshop and Museum collection. Never mind; ... More » »
Caitlin the intern took the East side and I took the West side of First Friday–hitting the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Vox Populi, Space 1026 and Black Floor. There was lots to look at, lots to ponder–and lots to love. Paul Chan and the Fabric Workshop Paul Chan’s 1st Light (I don’t know how to make the word Light look crossed out; sorry) silenced the usually chatty gallery goers. The excitement at the Fabric Workshop and Museum is Paul Chan. He’s showing 1st Light, a projected piece he had at the Whitney Biennial. Unlike last time I saw it in ... More » »
a detail of Russell Ihrig’s full-length self-portrait as a paper doll with moveable parts–yes, that part moves too, and is the only part that doesn’t lay flat on the door The Cincinnati gallery Publico is showing its brand of exuberant artmaking at Vox Populi Gallery this month. The show has three main events, all of them in some way referring to our do-it-yourself culture and the difference between hand-made and manufactured: The merchandise table had this terrific bandana for disguise. 1) The gallery scene: The front room at Vox is filled with artifacts from the Publico lifestyle–a vitrine with show ...
