At home with art–at the Art Alliance, Area 919 and My House

A house is not necessarily a home, nor is it necessarily an art gallery. But of three shows up right now in spaces originally meant for living, two of take advantage of the space in which they are showing, playing off the domestic and architectural spaces.

New grads–yup, more of them–at My House and Nexus

In the onslought of exhibits of graduating students work, there are still more standouts, and I thought I’d cherry pick a few. In the group exhibit Restless Discontent, at My House Gallery, I was intrigued by work by several of the artists. Sarah O’Donnell Sarah O’Donnell (who also has work up at Little Berlin right now–see previous post), from Tyler, brings to her drawings her interest in what we see and how it connects — or doesn’t connect — to what we don’t see. One shot deal–Art Glut at My House TODAY

Matthew Neff, Chance Encounter Number One, wood, ephemera, 2008 If you’re not on your toes, you might miss Art Glut. It opened Friday and closes after today. But don’t miss it if you can possibly get there. (Roberta did this as an editor’s pick for the Weekly). The sculpture in this show rocks; and the people organizing it come out of UArts’ sculpture department. There’s also some terrific 2-D stuff. And I loved the mix of DIY and not-so-DIY. Weekly Update 2 – Art Glut! this weekend

This week’s Weekly has my editor’s pick for Art Glut, an apartment show opening Friday and running only through Sunday. Below’s the copy. Photos at flickr. Alex Gartelmann opens My House Gallery this weekend in his South Philly row house. Every season brings another DIY gallery or alternative space with youthful energy and optimism to burn.
