Sarah Gamble’s Gothic at Pageant

Tempera on paper, drawing by Sarah Gamble from her show at Pageant Gallery. Sarah Gamble paints a particular type of girl-goth. I’ve been intrigued with Gamble’s work for some time partly because I don’t really “get” it but I want to. (You can see her work now in a solo show at Pageant Gallery through April 8). The work is goth in the sense of Gothic (cathedrals, dark mountains, the woods — things that are overwhelmingly big, beautiful and scary). But also goth in the sense of dark night of the soul where weird devils and fanciful emanations prowl. This ... More » »

Weekly Update 2 – Spring art emerges and looks good

This week’s Weekly has my Spring art roundup. Below is the copy with some pictures. More images at flickr here. And see some “before” shots of the new Vox Populi and new Black Floor/Copy, sill under construction when I visited a couple weeks ago.Be Still My Aching ArtPhilly’s scene retools for spring. Art Syndicate loses its space but will partner with Jinxed for an upcoming show. Meanwhile, at the institutions and established venues, life goes ... More » »

Hamdi Attia: Ruling the world in igpayatinlay

World Map, the central piece in Hamdi Attia’s show, Aegnapea, at Pageant Gallery I’m a little ambivalent about Hamdi Attia’s exhibit, Aegnapea, at Pageant: Soloveev Gallery, which by the way has a swell new web site. Slought had a fabulous piece by Attia earlier this year in one of the back rooms, a plugged-in television set, its innards removed and unfurled all around to create a force field of radiant mis/communication (see post). I hope you were lucky enough to catch it out in the wilds of West Philly. detail, World Map Behind Attia’s presence at both Slought and Pageant ... More » »

Hitler stays for Thanksgiving

I got a note recently from Pageant Gallery‘s Daniel Dalseth saying that local sculptor and Penn faculty Terry Adkins‘ exhibition, originally scheduled for November, had been postponed until the spring. So, put your anticipation for that on ice. Meanwhile, Aldert Mantje‘s Hitler the forlorn exhibit, The Otherwise Peaceful Island, will remain up at Pageant through Thanksgiving weekend, so get on over if you haven’t seen it. (See post) for more. In December, works by the Egyptian sculptor (and recent Penn MFA) Hamdi Attia will open at the gallery.

Light pours at Pageant

Hunter StablerOriginally uploaded by sokref1. Sonic Pretzel Mastadon, virtuoso cut paper, (detail) by Hunter Stabler. Click to see it bigger. Cut paper to die for and thread used in un-thread-like ways — that’s the big news from Pageant Gallery this month in Everything is Lightpour, a two person show pairing Penn MFA candidate Hunter Stabler and Vox Populi member Xiang Yang. Xiang Yang, piece with embroidery at two ends with thread spanning the void in the middle. Very nice piece. Yang, whose embroidered images (from sources like magazines and the newspaper) and set in plastic take-out boxes have appeared at ... More » »
