2011 PEI awards to organizations big and small

Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative just announced their 2011 grantees. Nice to see the grants to alternative spaces and organizations–Marginal Utility, Megawords, Vox Populi, Asian Arts Initiative, Slought (in addition to awards to some of our favorite local big guys — ICA, PMA, the Fab Workshop and Philagrafika)!  $874,900 were handed out to nine recipients — five for exhibitions and four for planning.  Since 1997, PEI has awarded 112 grants for a total of $11 million to bring excellent visual arts programming to the area — and to help foster excellent local programming. Here’s a link to the press release for full information ... PEI 2010 grants hit record $1 mil

Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative (PEI) announced today a record $1.1million in grants, half of which are going to first-time recipients–including $250,000 to the Mutter Museum. Collective gallery Vox Populi will receive its second grant–$39,670 to bring in guest curator Malik Gaines for an exhibit about how African-American identity is influenced by societal expectations of behavior (a concept based on W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of “Double-Consciousness”).

A million-plus dollars from PEI to arts organizations

And the big news is the inclusion of some little guys in this year’s Philadelphia Exhibition Initiatives grantees.  Notably, Aaron Igler/LURE got a planning grant for a multidisciplinary, multi-artistsound art piece;  Basekamp got money for Plausible Artworlds; and Vox Populi got dough for Dead Flowers.  All in all, $1,006,440 went to nine visual arts organizations and one independent curator (Igler).

Peter Saul, who will have a show at PAFA. This is one of the exhibits supported by PEI this year. The big surprise here is not in the big dollar grants this time but in the awards to some surprising smaller outfits that are doing really interesting work, like $20,000 for Megawords (Anthony Smyrski and Dan Murphy) for a Megawords Storefront; and $5,000 planning grant for Screening Video (Nadia Hironaka and Matt Suib) for a project with filmmaker Pat O’Neill. Some more news blasts from PEI

New grants for small exhibitors The Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative (PEI) has made some changes to support some of the smaller organizations that are putting on great shows. Small organizations with an operating budget of under $125,000 are now eligible to apply for funding of up to $40,000 for exhibitions and $7,500 for planning. Independent curators are now eligible to apply directly (without an institutional sponsor) for funding of up to $20,000 for exhibitions and $5,000 for planning. More money from Pew

The increases are part of $9.5 million Pew announced would go to the Philadelphia Center for Arts and Heritage and its programs, including Dance Advance, the Heritage Philadelphia Program, Pew Fellowships in the Arts, Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative, Philadelphia Music Project and the Philadelphia Theatre Initiative. ... Lists, Part 2-PEI Winners!

Philadelphia Exhibition Initiative‘s announcement of its 2007 exhibitions grant winners comes today. Three institutions, including first-time grantee, John Bartram Association (Bartram’s Garden) won the big money for exhibits. The Philadelphia Museum of Art got a grant to exhibit South African artist William Kentridge‘s Tapestries in its Notations series, and Curator Sid Sachs of Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery at UArts received funding for his Women in Pop Art exhibit. Bartram’s Garden, first-time PEI grantee, whose award was for a Mark Dion project retracing John Bartram’s steps to collect specimens.
