News   Jennie Thwing, Nic Coviello and Tim Portlock are displaying the fruits of their recent Meyer Family awards at the Main Line Art Center’s Imaginary Reality this month.  Celebrating the creation of this new award (full name: the Meyer Family Award for Contemporary Art), the show opens April 1, and on the same day MLAC is open to applications for next year’s Meyer Family Award. Imaginary Reality not only caps off ten years for  Main Line Art Center’s Betsy Meyer Memorial Exhibition series, but it also coincides with the Center’s new Digital Media Programs. Theaster Gates talks at the Fabric Workshop and Museum

The Martin Luther King Day of Service at the Fabric Workshop and Museum featured a talk by uber-international hot-ticket-artist Theaster Gates (pronounced with “aster” at the end). Gates, whose work includes making utopian spaces in cities, where people can meet and work, also does performance, clay and so much more. He is a guy who is hoping his art can rebuild how the world works, one brick at a time. Art Fairs in Miami, 2012 – Traffic everywhere and a show stopper at the new Miami Project

This year the traffic in Miami defeated me. The amount of activity generated by more than twenty art fairs would benefit from public, and preferably underground, transportation. While I saw plenty of art over two days at three fairs, I saw nothing sufficiently new or challenging to make up for bumper-to-bumper traffic and streets, endlessly clogged, with drivers who didn’t know where they were going. Art in the Dark part 1: Tino Sehgal’s This Variation at Documenta XIII

There have always been artists who are challenged by working at the edge of visibility. For painters that originally meant night scenes, which are famously difficult, but wonderful when they work. Ad Reinhardt’s black paintings are a twentieth-century example; a more recent one is Martin Creed’s Work No. 227, The Lights Going On And Off (2000), which I loved because it emphasized the essential, but often ignored, necessity of light for all vision.
