During the recent uproar and rescue efforts on behalf of the Gross Clinic, artist Charles Cushing undertook to paint a full-scale replica of the Eakins masterpiece. Charles just emailed that the work is done. And it’s for sale, art lovers, a veritable painted piece of art activism! Here’s Charles’s note and information on how to get hold of him. Dear Friends, Patrons, & Fellow Artists, This is an image of my recently completed copy of Thomas Eakins’ “The Gross Clinic”. Gross Clinic will be at Academy two days, no fee

My favorite protest sign; it and other protests led to a joint PAFA/PMA purchase of The Gross Clinic; soon it’s PAFA’s turn to display the work. Two free days of public viewing of Thomas Eakins’ The Gross Clinic will be offered March 17 and 18, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ historic building. The painting will go on display starting March 14. Gross Clinic to stay in Philly!!

Hooray!! Hooray!! And smiley faces all round. Read Mark McDonald’s story in the Daily News and the amazing Stephan Salisbury’s article in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Donations are still needed, though–because the institutions had to take out a loan to cover part of the purchase price. Here’s who ponied up the biggest bucks (quoting from the story). And yesterday, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts said their urgent fundraising campaign has been successful enough to make them co-owners of the Eakins masterpiece with the help of a loan from Wachovia Bank. So far, the two ... More » »

Dayton on Tuttle, Eakins and Arkansas

Post by Dayton Castleman One of you mentioned that if I ever saw anything interesting in Chicago to send you a little something on it. Here’s that something. The show is Richard Tuttle, at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The personal irony is that, until this week, Tuttle was filed under “L” for loathe in my personal catalog of art and artists. I confess that this had more to do with an embarrassing art-handling experience that involved tip-toeing around with a shard of broken plywood wearing white cotton gloves like I was on a bomb squad, than actually taking a ...
