Victoria Fu has a developing ability to make blandness visually entrancing. Clearly, she’s an artist who can take the “filler” that most of us block out every day and make it her subject matter. Fu had two shows in Philadelphia this month – Lorem Ipsum, a premiere of new work at Marginal Utility (through May 26) and Time in Three Parts at the University of the Arts (now closed). Over the next few weeks, Primary Information is staging a series of events in the installation and interventions on the Excursus website. Tonight, the opening program features performances by experimental musicians Alan Licht and C. Spencer Yeh. David McKenzie; Everything’s alright, nothing’s okay! at the Rosenwald Wolf Gallery
A young man in the nondescript uniform of his generation (trainers, tee shirt,…) dances in front of the automatic doors to a grocery store. His solo (captured on video) veers between street dancing and modern dance, then turns into the stumbling of a drunk. The slow motion, repeats and jump cuts of the video manipulation creates its own, sophisticated choreography. News It’s time to light 20 candles for Pentimenti! Happy anniversary to one of Philly’s best galleries – it’s great to see them running strong! To celebrate, they’re presenting 20 in 2012 vision, an exhibition featuring the work of sixteen of their artists, all of whom have created new work specifically for the show. The only guideline they had to follow was the use of emerald and/or white (apparently traditional 20th anniversary colors) as their basic palette. Commotion Festival June 16-30 – The Redevelopment Authority’s Risk-Taking Temporary Public Art Project
Commotion is a six-month project directed by John J. H. Phillips for University of the Arts (U Arts). Funded under the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority (RDA), it involved a course for U Arts students, seven professional artists in various art forms (including writing, dance and theater), workshops with residents of Grays Ferry, Point Breeze, and South of South Street, two artists as workshop leaders and a large number of technical staff. Renny Molenaar and Rocio Cabello, two international transplants to Germantown (by way of New York) bring their upstart ways to a new space –Imperfect Gallery. Imperfect, at 5610 Greene St., is run by Molenaar, who came to Philadelphia with his partner Cabello in 2002. Imperfect opens June 23, 5-10pm, with a show featuring 30 Germantown artists. Philadelphia Yarnbombing 101, Jessie Hemmons’ and team’s piece of the action is in the 1st floor gallery in City Hall. Meta-Fiber, a juried exhibition, is in the glass cases on first and second floors of the building. Yarnbombing brings to the white-walled gallery space the global street art phenomenon of “cosying” public fixtures with colorful knitted yarn. Meta-Fiber was juried by PAA’s Sarah Archer. Scaling up – Chris Davison makes a mural
Christopher Davison usually works small. His drawings and prints are dark, fairy tale dreamscapes that involve enormous numbers of details made with a wide variety of mostly tiny marks. But when the opportunity arose to create a wall-scale piece — a mural, in fact, on a gallery wall — Davison took a leap of faith and plunged right in. The resulting black and white mural in Gallery 817 at University of the Arts was a triumph of content, style, imagination and just plain hard work — a perfect scaled-up translation of the artist’s dreamy and threatening aesthetic into gargantuan proportions.
