The traveling Peter Saul retrospective opens at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Oct. 18 to Jan. 4. Holland Cotter saw it at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, CA (there til Sept. 21) and wrote a wonderful piece about it a few weeks back in the NY Times. ART REVIEW
Provocateur: The Peter Saul Manifesto
By HOLLAND COTTER
Published: August 16, 2008

Saul is a major American painter and an outrageous one. We at artblog are big fans.

Here’s what we said about a show of his we saw at Leo Koenig in 2006:

Peter Saul’s grotesque visions at Leo Koenig mix politics and the personal with fabulous acidic colors, great dry-brush technique. Unafraid to be funny.

I heard on the radio that Saul will be conducting a master class at PAFA when he’s in town although I don’t see anything about that on the website. PAFA has two art at lunch programs about Saul. Oct. 22, historian David McCarthy will talk about Saul’s Vietnam War-era paintings and Dec. 3, PAFA Curator of Modern Art, Robert Cozzolino, will talk about one of Saul’s paintings that’s based on Thomas Eakins‘ The Gross Clinic. Both lectures are free and open to the public and start at noon in the Furness Building auditorium.
