CITYWIDE is hosting a fundraiser at Crane Arts next Saturday, July 20, in the midst of their quest to reach their $13,000 match to their Knights Art Challenge Grant, and we hope you’ll help them keep the exciting productions coming by showing up for some BBQ good times. As with any summer shindig, there’s prizes, beer & food on hand, all donated by local businesses in Philadelphia. Get tickets directly from CITYWIDE, or at FJORD Gallery for $15, cash or check.

A huzzah to The Village of Arts and Humanities: at a recent meeting of the Board of Directors of the Stockton Rush Bartol Foundation, $137,500 was awarded to 25 local arts organizations. This year’s $5,000 George Bartol Arts Education Award went to the Village – congrats, and keep up that good work!

You know what they say about all work and no play....

Since this weather already has people in a state of abandon, Erin Boyle’s current project, “Art, Play and the Environment” is only fitting for the prevailing summer atmosphere. Boyle and a cadre of University of the Arts MFA students are hosting a fete of food and building for their 3rd Sunday on the Platform, an ongoing occurrence taking place at Hamilton Hall Public Platforms at 10:30am each Sunday throughout the summer. Here, participants are afforded the chance to let their inner child run wild and play with large scale building blocks. This event is open to the public, so feel free to share with  friends and family, as well as track their progress on the UArts MFA blog. Art, Play and the Environment is the product of collaboration between Erin Boyle, Lewis Colburn, Zac Pritchard, Monika Felber and the MFA Studio Art Students at the University of the Arts.

Opportunities

Arts Guild New Jersey has announced the 2ndannual Artist of the Month, a juried competition open to all fine artists. Twelve artists are chosen, each to be featured on Arts Guild New Jersey’s website (along with images of the artwork, statement and current exhibit resume) for one month over the course of one year. Other publicity perks include announcements and social media promotions for each Artist of the Month, and an exhibit/sale at Arts Guild New Jersey in Rahway in early 2015. The deadline for submitting artwork is Monday, September 16, 2013; you’ll find out within three weeks of the deadline. To enter, visit  their site and complete an entry form and upload up to six images of recent work. Images uploaded for the judging process should be formatted as JPEGS, saved at 72dpi and be no larger than 4 x 6 inches. There is a $10.00 entry fee which can be paid by creditcard through the link on the Arts Guild’s website. Artists may alternately send a CD with six images formatted as specified above, with a statement, current resume, artist’s name, address, phone number and email address. CDs should be mailed to Arts Guild NJ: 1670 Irving St. Rahway, NJ 07065, and include a $10.00 check written out to “Arts Guild New Jersey” to be considered for the competition.

Julie Courtney, one of our favorite independent curators based in Philadelphia, has informed us of a new opportunity juried by Lance Fung and herself; the Emirates Skywards Future Artists competition, launched in 2010, is seeking entries that represent all three media categories: Painting/Illustration, Photography/Digital Media and 3D (Sculpture, Glass, Ceramics). Three winners are chosen (one for each brief), whose work is to be used on the Skywards membership cards as well as various other Skywards communications. Each artist’s name is displayed alongside their winning artwork. In order to enter, you must be over the age of 18. There is no entry fee, but entries must be submitted before 23.07.2013 at 23:59 GMT.Each brief asks you to creatively interpret one of four themes. Your piece of visual art may be produced in any of these media: Painting/Illustration, Photography/Digital Media or 3D (Sculpture, Glass, Ceramics).

Peter Rose’s “Solaristics”, a journal of mysterious meteorological observation, is now online. If we’re using the above image as an indicator, we’re going to hazard a guess that it is indeed, exactly what it says on the front.
