Time to put on your beleaguered arts advocate hat: Last week, the U.S House of Representatives Interior Appropriations Subcommittee gave the initial OK to a FY2014 budget that proposes $71 million worth of cuts to the National Endowment for the Arts. Essentially, this would eliminate nearly half of the program’s funding. Business as usual, but it doesn’t have to be this way. The suggested cuts are way out of proportion to other proposals for reducing spending across the board, and the NEA is campaigning hard for legislators to recognize the contributions of the arts to life in America. Americans for the Arts (AFTA) has prepared a customizable message for arts advocates to send to representatives, for those pressed for time but ready to act.

Altered Realities, a UArts show featuring Christina Day, Marc Blumthal, Tim Portlock and Ryan Wilson Kelly runs August 8-16, and, most wonderfully, is curated by third year MFA students. The reception is from 6-9 PM.

via Cate Fallon – Keep an eye out next year for Women in Clothes, a compendium of thoughts on the meaning of women’s style by Sheila Heti, Heidi Julavits and Leanne Shapton, associate editor Mary Mann. Forthcoming from Blue Rider Press, Penguin UK, and S. Fischer Verlag in Fall 2014, Women in Clothes promises interviews, conversations, surveys, diagrams and drawings, and original contributions from established artists and writers like Miranda July, Zadie Smith, Molly Ringwald, Eileen Myles, Mona Kowalska, Roxane Gay and Sarah Nicole Prickett. In the spring, the editors are planning an online forum in parallel with the book. You can sign up for their mailing list to be notified about the launch of the online community and the book. Dom Streater, Moore alumna ’10, recently saw one of her biggest dreams come true when she was chosen to be a designer on Project Runway! She appeared this week on an all new episode on Lifetime; to show their support, Moore live tweeted the episode with the “hashtag” #designerdom, and is posting a recap of each week’s episode every Friday on Moore’s blog.

Adam Wallacavage’s Swan Chandelier and one of his octopus chandeliers can be seen “hanging” at MoMA – well, in a sense, but that doesn’t diminish the awesomeness! They’re visible in the second floor windows directly across from the gift store, gracing the halls with tentacles and beaks.
