Joe Boruchow’s largest piece so far is now complete! Gracing the walls of a classic rowhome between 9thand 10th on Dickinson Street across from Southwark Post Office in South Philadelphia, Watchtowers is a 36×46 foot mural. Created through the City of Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program, with Brad Carney as lead muralist, Watchtowers’ dedication is being held on Sunday, November 17 at 2pm. The mural is a striking homage to both the historical and current architectural elements of Philadelphia’s East Passyunk Avenue neighborhood; residents of the area well-versed in Philly history might even recognize features like those of the demolished Moyamensing Prison.

Not that we’re lacking for motivation to check out the Flower Show every year, but the 2014 iteration is going in an artistic direction that sounds irresistible. Although it’s still in the works, the show’s major floral and landscape exhibitors are teaming up with art museums or art schools for collaborative expressions of art through horticulture. Partnerships that have already been devised include the American Institute of Floral Designers and the curator of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s 2014 exhibition of Korean art and culture. Other collabs include the Getty Museum, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, Storm King, the Penn Museum, and PAFA. The show’s happening March 1-9, 2014, so we’re assured to have more details coming in over the coming months.

Tonight and tomorrow night, the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is hosting the newest iteration of Clifford Owens’ project Photographs with an Audience, as part of its upcoming exhibition Make & Do. Part performance and part photography, Owens is looking for participants to take part in this project; visitors are encouraged to join the artist in a large room, respond to improvised situations, and be documented in photographs that are then displayed in the exhibition. Both nights take place at 7 PM the PPAC in the Crane Arts Old School Building. Free and open to the public with an RSVP, the performances may contain mature content.

Opportunities

Elsewhere of Greensboro, NC, is offering residencies in one of the most twee setups we’ve heard of in some time.  A living museum built in a former thrift store in downtown Greensboro, Elsewhere is now accepting applications for 2014 residencies, welcoming installation, sculpture, textile, sound, and video artists, musicians, curators, scholars, writers, system-thinkers and game-makers crossing interdisciplinary boundaries. Any artists who apply have at their disposal Elsewhere’s 58-year collection of cultural and material surplus for site-specific projects, not to mention a three-story museum that’s frequently home to living installations, and public studios. Residencies are 2-6 weeks, and applications are due by January 10, 2014. Elsewhere also offers creative retreats and internships, so if those are on your watchlist be sure to check them out as well.
