Open Mic Night at Twelve Gates this Thursday, Nov. 19, 7PM – Twelve Gates Arts and Leeway Foundation present Haunting Voices, featuring performances by Jai Arun Ravine, Suzie Afridi, and Michelle Myers & Catzie Vilayphonh of Yellow Rage. This open mic and salon celebrates the launch of Twelve Gates’ newest exhibit, Ruins and Fabrications, which explores visual narratives of loss and futurity through the work of two women photographers, Gauri Gill and Annu Matthew.

New Writers House at Rutgers-Camden – The ribbon cutting’s today at 305 Cooper St., extensively renovated to house the English Department and MFA program in creative writing. First floor will be a programming space. “Historically known as the Henry Genet Taylor House, the structure, originally built in 1885, was designed by renowned Philadelphia architect Wilson Eyre Jr. in the style of American Queen Anne Revival. In 1989, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places…”

Soapbox expands into new studio space in West Philadelphia – 4700 Kingsessing Ave., a renovated Furness+Evans C. Church, is the new home for an expanded Soapbox Community Print Shop and Zine Library, a printmakers/makers work space and gallery. …”In this new 4,500 square feet space,The Soapbox will offer a studio fully equipped for letterpress and screen-printing, as well as additional equipment and supplies for bookmaking, zine making, papermaking, and offset lithography. The new facility will also include private artist and writing studios, as well as keyholder memberships….” Soapbox is five years old and was started by Charlene Kwon and Mary Tasillo. Moore College of Art & Design and The Links Inc. create two new $5,000 scholarships for Freshmen of color – the Sarah Strickland Scott Scholar and the Margaret R. Hawkins Scholarship for Women in the Arts – to honor The Links co-founders. The scholarships will be awarded to two freshman students of color during the next fall semester. Other recipients will be named for three additional years.
