Description and Dialog

A large 6-panel black and white comic from the series “Socialist Grocery,” in which Sebastian recalls the moment they learned of Queen Elizabeth’s death at the Post Office.

In the top left panel, Sebastian stands in line behind two people at the post office. One of the people is looking at their phone. Sebastian, the narrator, says “I was in the post office when I first heard the news.”

In the top right panel, Sebastian watches the two people, who have turned to talk to each other. The person wearing a mask exclaims, “Did you hear, Queen Elizabeth II just died??” Next to them, a person wearing a short sleeve shirt replies, “Oh my God. No way. She took on so much and worked so hard since her 20s.” The person wearing a mask remarks “She was such a good person.”

In the middle left panel, Sebastian’s bewildered face fills the frame as they continue listening to the conversation. They overhear someone say “She was like, 98?” Another offscreen person replies, “She was… What shocking news…”

In the middle right panel, a post office employee behind glass is talking to a customer with freckles. The postal worker asks “Did you need to mail something?” The customer with freckles and a mask says “Yes,” looking away from the counter.

In the bottom left panel, a person standing in front of Sebastian laments, “We really lost a woman like no other…” Sebastian thinks, “Did this actually happen? I have to check.” They pull out their phone in disbelief to look it up.

In the bottom right panel, Sebastian finds a meme on Instagram depicting Queen Elizabeth trying to break into the gates of heaven. The text above the meme reads”Diana, open up these pearly gates right now!” Under the meme, a caption declares, “Bye bye Liz.”
