Ahem, not to brag but you will be entertained and enlightened. Stella’s fashionblog, named in honor of artblog, deals with hot accessory issues like Scunci vs Conair. And check out the outre fashion party pictures from a weekend soiree at the Warhol Museum. I am, like, jealous.
One of my all time favorite books is Candide, in which the hero turns his back on the horrors of the world and instead cultivates his garden. The book seems fresh as a daisy even today. The symbolic story is less a rejection of activism than a rejection of pie-in-the-sky optimism and an embrace of doing it yourself. Candide would appreciate Stella’s garden–shaggy and overgrown but still putting out buds and shoots. I have a couple more photos at flickr.
Cosmos (orange) and Hyacinth Bean vines in a wild tangle in Stella’s garden. There’s one giant sunflower in there too which will bloom sometime soon. Earlier this summer Stella became a gardener. She planted and fertilized, worried and weeded. She tried this and that and some things worked and some (the strawberries which the squirrels keep eating) didn’t. Like all gardeners, Stella planted with an eye towards pleasing more than just herself. Although she was always the number one audience for her garden, Steve and I and our neighbors all enjoy what she’s done. As with many things in life, ... More » »
Greek antiquities in the new wing at the Met museum. Stella, Steve and I went to the Met last week to see the new antiquities wing and whatever else we could see in the big museum. Cate joined us. The Greek and Roman galleries, redone with skylights in vaulted ceilings are glorious spaces to be in–the kind of space that elevates you and makes you feel grand, elegant and like you’re worthy of a dignified stroll among the ruins. Roman antiquities at the Met. Here’s where cellphones, youTube, email falls away before something more tangible — something really important, civilized ... More » »
Nick Cassway, Nexus Executive Director, gets a hug from Whole Foods shopper Elyse yesterday at the Nexus 5% fundraiser at the store. We–Roberta, her daughter Stella, and I–shopped at Whole Foods yesterday to help support the combo catalog-cookbook for Nexus’ upcoming Yummy show. Five percent of all store receipts from yesterday will be directed towards Yummy, which opens December 2007 and runs through January 2008. Tuan who works in the produce department got a kick out of us posing with the peaches. So we took his picture too. The money will support the Yummy show and catalog. When we stopped ... More » »
Stella in the car on the way to graduation last week. I’m off to Pittsburgh today with Stella. The new graduate will be in orientation sessions and registering for her first semester at University of Pittsburgh. Yippee!! Very happy times indeed. Be good and be well and I’ll see you next week when I’m back. xoxoxo
So I’ve been a little out of the picture of late. I’m sorry. For this I will pay in bad blogger hell (I’m already paying on earth in guilt feelings). But I must tell you one of the things that’s been occupying my thoughts and minutes: Squiggles a little pig who loves cupcakes. This is a story that Stella is working on for a children’s book. One of my favorite illustrations from Stella’s book Squiggles and the Pink Cupcake. In this illustration Squiggles is getting the one and only thing he wanted for his birthday, pink cupcakes. “His friends didn’t ... More » »
