Tara Donovan in Cincinnati

Post by Minna Dubin At the enthused insistence of my new in-laws, I went to American sculptor Tara Donovan’s first major museum survey show, at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center. I am glad I did. Her work is both huge and small; each piece a form made up of tiny manufactured objects. The first one that really hit me was a white undulating cloud-like wall. As I walked from one end to the other,  the cloud gave the illusion of movement, with shadows increasing and decreasing as I moved.

Beauty, sex, politics and joy in New York

Spencer Finch does Jorge Pardo in the gallery front window at James Cohan Gallery (see way below). Beautiful or ugly? You decide. Once again we went to hear Robert Storr at the Met last Saturday. (See previous post for Storr’s lecture on abstraction last week. ) We were looking for the light as usual but by the time the lecture ended we were confused as ever about the lecture’s point. In a lecture that ran at breakneck speed through a zillion slides with not a lot of commentary here’s what he said, more or less. Beauty is a mutable concept ... More » »

New York Ramble: a photo post

Steve at Brian Tolle’s Irish Hunger Memorial in downtown Manhattan. One of our favorite things to do in New York is walk. We walked from our hotel at 39th and 2nd Ave to the Guggenheim (89th and 5th) and back again. We like to walk in Central Park (who doesn’t). And I love the Battery Park City walkway along the Hudson River. So when Steve said What do you want to do today I said let’s walk. We took the subway to Chambers St. and walked over to the Hudson and turned south. If you haven’t done it, it’s a ... More » »

Ah, New York reflections

“Did you know Grand Central is a Terminal and not a station?” asked Cate who had just learned this interesting bit of information. Hmmm. Well maybe. A terminal, Cate explained, is not a pass-through station like 30th Street Station, Philadelphia, where you can get trains passing through en route to points north, south, east or west. All the train routes in a terminal begin and end there. Very European, I thought. Like in Paris, where Gare du Nord is where you go to take a North-bound train and Gare du Sud is for the South-bound ones. Stella, Cate and I ... More » »

Cool, crisp cups of Tara Donovan

Tara Donovan at Pace Wildentein in Chelsea Tara Donovan’s Plastic Cup landscape looked like a part of the polar ice cap trucked into Chelsea to represent the threat of global warming. Click picture to see it bigger. And see more pictures at flickr. We caught the last day of Tara Donovan’s Plastic Cup exhibit at Pace Wildenstein Gallery in Chelsea. I felt like I was in an ice skating rink waiting for the Zamboni to come clear the rink. Steve wanted to know who would buy such a thing. I said people will. Let’s ask at the desk. So after ...
