Office Hours – Zoe Strauss at the PMA

“What the hell?” sums up Zoe Strauss’s rationale for choosing one of three paintings from the archives of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to hang in her temporary office at the museum. This could easily also be the reaction of unsuspecting passers by to one of Strauss’s billboard photos. Countless people must by now have stumbled on the citywide series of  billboard prints while dozing off on SEPTA, crossing Gray’s Ferry Ave., or looking up from their iPhones. As the familiar city landscape reveals a less familiar face or empty storefront pictured where an advertisement once was, viewers have been ... More » »

Report from under I-95: Wet but wild

For the first time, I came home empty-handed from Zoe Strauss’ Under I-95 photo exhibit today, her spring bouquet to South Philadelphia in South Philadelphia, now in its ninth year, with one  more year to go. What a crowd!!! They beat me to the punch on all the pictures I was trying to snag. It was a sure sign of success. Photo by Chris Pacquette. Scene Under I 95 Sunday, May 4, with people looking at Zoe Strauss’s photos installed on the pillars that hold up the highway. If you were out Sunday to see Zoe Strauss‘s 7th Under I 95 exhibition you may have noted the film crew hanging out and shooting footage. Who were they? A crew from City Projects in Los Angeles working with US Artists, the group that gave a $50,000 grant to Strauss (and a bunch of other artists) last year. City Projects is documenting the artists who received the grants and putting the videos up ... More » »

Zoe Strauss’ Sunday, Sunday, super Sunday

Spring is here and that means the 7th annual Zoe Strauss Under I-95 show and sale. Of the people, by the people and for the people. 231 photographs, 67 of them new, for the rock bottom price of $5 each. The color photos digitally reproduced are displayed on the pillars that hold up the mighty super speedway I-95 in South Philadelphia near Target. Those become lagniappe for the cognoscenti at the end of the day. Grab one of the images off a pillar, absolutely free, with Zoe’s blessing. Please only one to a customer. Since she exploded on the scene ... More » »
