Another woman on the top!

Congratulations to Danielle Rice, newly appointed Executive Director of the Delaware Art Museum. Rice, currently an associate director at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, takes over at Delaware June 1 and will steer the Museum as it heads back to a $24.5 million renovated and expanded building, the fruit of years of fundraising and construction.

I hope Rice’s appointment means a return to some good contemporary programming at the DAM. Years back, the Museum organized a series of regional biennial exhibitions that were a showcase for emerging talent (including many Philadelphia artists). They were great exhibitions and they’ve been missed. So bring ’em back, please!

Philadelphia, by the way, is a great home for women in the arts. Hard to say what combination of factors causes us to have the large number of women curators, gallery owners, funders, artists, writers and heads of museums. Can’t be the water. But here’s to us…may we all prosper and do well — and do good — in this usually male-dominated field.
