An intriguing side dish for the ongoing Hidden City Festival: the Data Garden presents Heritage Electronics at the Historical Society of Frankford tonight. Featuring artists making music with heritage and primitive electronic instruments such as theremins and something called the Buchla Music Easel (sounds like our bag, no?), the lineup consists of King Britt, DJ and producer; Charles Cohen, veteran electronic improvisor performing on the Buchla Music Easel; Laura Baird, Dino Lionetti, & Gretchen Lohse on theremin, viola and electronics; NO CARRIER aka Don Miller on video synths and NES; and Daniel Rehn (wwwtxt), who resurrects the voices of digital pioneers through 140-character excerpts and curated video. The show runs from 7-10 PM at the Historical Society of Frankford, 1507 Orthodox St. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and $11 for Hidden City members. Keep in mind that Hidden City Festival Passes are not accepted for this event.

The MuralArts/Philadelphia Water Dept.'s vision for a water system-inspired community art project.
The MuralArts/Philadelphia Water Dept.’s vision for a water system-inspired community art project.

This Saturday, June 1st, the Philadelphia Water Department, in partnership with Mural Arts, is hosting a community art making day in Queen Village at Christian and 3rd Streets. The plan is to involve community members in creating a one-of-a-kind piece of art work that shows ways in which water travels under our streets and into the rivers and streams, using heat and adhesive thermoplastic dots of various sizes to the asphalt on the road to create a unique, “water-esque” pattern. The display is expected to last up two years and hopefully serve as a continuing reminder of the importance of water in Philadelphia. No pre-registration is required. Food, music and other activities are available for all ages! For more information contact Shari at Shari.Hersh@muralarts.org or 267-972-3934.

Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) announced the appointment of Gwynne Keathley as MICA’s Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies. Keathley most recently has served as vice provost at Philadelphia University, and has also served at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles and Parsons the New School for Design, New York, where she was chair of Core Studies. Keathley also has five years of experience as a professional design practitioner and has worked with several firms and museums. Congratulations and good luck, Gwynne!

Opportunities

89plus is truly for the kids – this initiative, co-founded by Simon Castets and Hans Ulrich Obrist is seeking proposals from artists, writers, architects, filmmakers, musicians, designers, scientists and technologists to document and explore a generation whose voices are only starting to be heard, yet which makes up almost half of the world’s population. Only one rule: you must be 89plus—born in or after 1989, a milestone year whose implications are still being studied. Submissions are kept on a private research database for consideration by the project’s co-curators. As the project continues in the years to come, those selected are notified of their inclusion in new endeavors. Submissions are welcome at any time, however the mid-year deadline for 2013 activities is July 30, 2013.

Hard to believe it’s been an entire year – some might even say it’s surreal. PhilaMOCA, following up on the macabre success of the 2012 ERASERHOOD FOREVER show – an artistic celebration of the work of David Lynch, is doing it all again! The opening reception this year is set for Friday, July 12 from 6-11:30 PM and, as before features performers, musicians, amusements, and, of course, art in the style of the work of David Lynch. All mediums are welcome (no hazardous materials). Please send digital files or photos of submissions to curator Chip Schwartz at chip@philamoca.org. Links are preferred for six or more entries. There is a $25 participation fee per selected piece of artwork. The deadline for submissions is June 28, 2013. Drop-offs of accepted art can be made at PhilaMOCA (531 N. 12th Street) on Monday, July 8 from Noon – 6:00 PM. Work must be ready to hang and prepared for installation. For questions or concerns, contact Chip Schwartz: chip@philamoca.org. Full event details coming soon!
