Philadelphia Artists shine outside Philly, kudos for ‘Philly D.A.’, Diane Burko, Camae Ayewa, and Opportunities!

It's the season to shine! And we love how Philadelphia artists are truly tied to their local community, but shine in national and international venues. Here are a few recent sightings of artists' sparkling outside the city, plus some "best of lists" shining light on Philadelphia artists. Also, opportunities from Camden Fireworks and Perkins Center for the Arts! Thanks to Andrea Kirsh for help with this roundup!

ICYMI, The Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased a group of works by Roberto Lugo, which can be seen in the long-term installation, “Before Yesterday We could Fly,” an Afrofuturist period room. His “Digable Underground,” a commemorative urn with a portrait of Sojourner Truth, is featured in all the of the museum’s publicity about the installation.

A solo exhibition of work by Theodore Harris, “Art as Social Praxis” was on view this Autumn at the Linfield Gallery, Linfield University, McMinnville, OR. The exhibit closed November 21, 2021. A show catalog was published, which was dedicated to the late art historian, David Craven.

Joy Feasley and Paul Swenbeck were Arts/Industry Foundry residents at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, WI) in 2017. They returned to the Kohler Company factory in 2019 to work in the Pottery and Foundry on their artist-designed washroom “Listen, the Snow is Falling” for the Art Preserve at the Kohler Arts Center, which was completed this year. Interested in applying to the Kohler Residency program? 2022 residencies are filled. But apply for the 2023 residencies beginning February, 2022.

Jesse Krimes is the focus of the documentary, “Krimes,” directed by Alysa Nahmias. The film also features Jared Owens, Russell Craig, and Gilberto Rivera, masters in “incarceral aesthetics” as described by the scholar, Nicole Fleetwood. Krimes and Craig have launched Right of Return, to give released individuals an opportunity to pursue professional opportunities as artists.

KUDOS TO PHILADELPHIA ARTISTS IN 2021 “BEST OF” LISTS

Black Quantum Futurism’s Camae Ayewa (Moor Mother)’s new song “Open the Gates” gets listed as number 7 on the New York Times’s roundup of best songs of 2021. Listen here and be thrilled.

Diane Burko and her climate-activist show “Seeing Climate Change” gets a big shout out by Holland Cotter in the New York Times’s roundup of best of art shows of 2021. Read Susan Isaacs’s review.

Call for submissions – Perkins Center for the Arts’ winter photography show
Photography 41 “Looking Up”
Perkins Center for the Arts is seeking submissions for Photography 41, a juried photography show. There are three top prizes and a special prize for a photograph that will be chosen by the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Curator of Photographs, Peter Barberie, for the Museum’s permanent collection.
