Jasper Johns distills the past through the calm analytics of mind applied to memory, at Matthew Marks Gallery

Our contributor Mark Lord experiences the Jasper Johns exhibit at Matthew Marks, and finds the highly charged subject of the work (a 1965 photo of a U.S. combat soldier weeping at the loss he could not prevent of friends in the war). He talks about the intimacy and emotion of the subject and how Johns removes the emotion for a reading about the mind distilling memory over time. The show is up through April 6 at the New York gallery.

Pat Steir’s mystical contemplative waterfalls in the Barnes Foundation lobby

Mark Lord sees the installation of monumental waterfall paintings by Pat Steir at the Barnes and points out the works’ eerie connection to our world of melting glaciers and other tragic cascades of water when natural forces are disrupted as they have been by global warming. In his lyrical post, Lord writes of beauty and something cosmic in the drips, splashes and vigorous build ups of Steir’s painted moments. Agnes Martin gets long-overdue attention with “The Untroubled Mind” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

New Artblog contributor, Mark Lord visits “Agnes Martin: The Untroubled Mind/Works from the Daniel W. Dietrich II Collection” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and meditates on the enduring appeal of Martin’s subtle hand. Lord hopes this small exhibition of minimalist paintings from the 1960s and 70s, on view through October 14, will spark a resurgence of interest in the reclusive artist’s body of work.
