And now for something a bit different for the Barnes. This Sunday, artists Odili Odita, Anne Schaefer, and John Gatti speak on a panel on abstraction at the Barnes Foundation, this Sunday at 2 pm. This is the first of three such talks planned by the Barnes over the summer, addressing abstraction; subsequent panels plan to get into “Art on the Wall/Art as the Wall (with Alex Baker, Joe Boruchow, and TBD); and Art in Public Places (Larry Becker, Moe Brooker, and Michelle Ortiz). The dates are 6/16, 7/21, and 8/25. Each panel is free, with advance reservation required. Tickets are available through the Barnes’ site.

In case you missed out on seeing the new Whitney at the Highline, there are always the insane Artschwager elevators to look forward to. Their debut is a ways off in the future (2015), but when the Whitney Museum of American Art opens its downtown location, its four elevators, designed by the late Richard Artschwager are expected to be one of the building’s signature design touches, as well as the only commissioned works of art in the Whitney’s new Renzo Piano-designed location at the corner of Gansevoort and Washington Streets.

NBC’s “Today” show recently spent seven hours with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program to film a piece on their Art Education Program and substantial work with at-risk youth. Their segment, which aired yesterday, featured an interview of Executive Director Jane Golden and reporter Craig Melvin at the site of the recently dedicated Peace Is A Haiku Song mural, and a visit to the Laura W. Waring Elementary School and to several murals around the city by a team of four.

We won’t have the facts until next week but this development is materializing quickly: the city and Center City District are planning open calls for arts programming at the new Dilworth Plaza! Together with the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, CCD is hosting a brief presentation by Michelle Shannon, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for CCD, followed by a question and answer session on Tuesday, June 18 from 4:00PM – 5:00 PM in the Mayor’s Reception Room (City Hall, Room 202). Stay tuned for more info next week.

Artblog participated in this study, and what do you know: we are one of the fragile parts of the media ecosystem! A new Pew Research Center study finds that nonprofit news outlets represent a growing new source of information – but one whose long-term financial sustainability is up for interpretation. So….same old, same old?

Opportunities

As part of their 1% for public art project through the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority, Breadboard is offering an artist residency project. Open to all artists of any location, regardless of geographic location, Art Along the Avenue of Technology (AAAT) explores how Art and Technology converge along the corridor of Market Street west of 30th Street. Community engagement, activism, 21st century creative technologies and education are the key tools, and residents have the use of the Science Center’s campus along a five-block stretch of Market Street Corridor as a ‘project zone’ for community engagement and place-making activities.
