Look! It’s Nexus video on the internet!

Amanda Ritter, interviewed for a Nexus tv episode.  Ritter, a Tyler photography grad, was in the show Nexus Selects 2008. Local alternative gallery Nexus, long-time pillar of the Philly alternative scene and one of the anchor establishments at Crane Arts, has put a series of videos about its 2007-2008 exhibitions online at blip tv. Check it out. The videos by WeDoTvStuff.com are really nice and a great addition to the cyber “air” waves.

Army of the TV-headed army It’s Bonnie Brenda Scott’s installation ALERT! THE MEDIA! at Nexus. She’s one of three in the current new member show, and she practically takes over the gallery with her energy, her vision and her bold pop colors and wheat-paste/grafitti aesthetic. We stop and shop for Yummy

Nick Cassway, Nexus Executive Director, gets a hug from Whole Foods shopper Elyse yesterday at the Nexus 5% fundraiser at the store. We–Roberta, her daughter Stella, and I–shopped at Whole Foods yesterday to help support the combo catalog-cookbook for Nexus’ upcoming Yummy show. Five percent of all store receipts from yesterday will be directed towards Yummy, which opens December 2007 and runs through January 2008. Tuan who works in the produce department got a kick out of us posing with the peaches. So we took his picture too. The money will support the Yummy show and catalog. When we stopped ... More » »

Shop with artblog tomorrow!

In a burst of enthusiasm we’ll be squeezing the oranges tomorrow at Whole Foods to help Nexus raise some dough. (See previous post for more). We’ll be there around noonish with out cameras so watch out! We’ll be looking for you. If you recognize us say hello. We will be posting pictures afterwards–a couple on the blog and all of them on flickr. We heart Nexus.

Yummy! Nexus needs you to shop!!

This just in from Nick Cassway of Nexus. I’m not sure if it’s the first instance of a supermarket/art gallery tie-in but it’s the first time in my memory that a grocery store has given cold hard cash in the cause of art (they often cough up cookies and juice for school openings etc). So good going, Whole Foods!! and get out there and shop, y’all, and support Nexus and its show, Yummy, which is about America’s food fixations, eating habits, table manners and food faux pas. On Wednesday, June 27th (this coming Wednesday!), Whole Foods Market at 10th and ... More » »

Interview with Matthew Pruden: Photos of ghosts

Matthew Pruden on Second Thursday at Nexus After seeing Matthew Pruden’s exhibit, Magnetic Sleep, at Nexus, I caught up with him to ask a few questions. The exhibit is of a group of small, Victorian-looking photographs of supposedly supernatural phenomena, a terrific sound track of scary noises, and a projection from the eyes of a skull onto a screen. The photos, which were inspired by the 19th century photos of spirits and other supernatural phenomena, are sly–just this side of believable. And the sounds are almost haunted house staples–but also just enough off to raise questions. A video projection from ... More » »

Weekly Update 1 – Nexus, Second Thursdays and the Crane

Here’s the copy for my Editor’s Choice piece in this week’s Weekly. I’ve added a few pictures below and there’s more at flickr. Jennie Thwing, video projection of her grandfather talking about his past. It’s moving and captivating with a soundtrack that stutters his phrases repeatedly and in time to an electronic dance beat. It’s a little haunted and haunting. Not only are the co-op’s new digs a wow—concrete floors, high ceilings, exposed beams, huge factory windows—but with the arrival of Nexus, the Second Street/American Street corridor has reached a critical mass of galleries to warrant a new event: Second ...
