Impassioned creativity plus awareness of being watched, in ‘Dark Sousveillance’ at Vox Populi Gallery

Alex Smith reviews Logan Cryer’s latest curation ‘Dark Sousveillance,’ inspired by Simone Browne’s research on Blackness and surveillance. The group show features Black and predominantly queer artists, examining “wanting to be seen by each other, and wanting to hide from the violence of hypervisibility.” The exhibition is on view at Vox Populi, by appointment, thru Jan. 16, 2022.

Saving a historic building’s facade when the rest of the building is destroyed, gentrification in Baltimore

As with many cities undergoing rampant gentrification in older neighborhoods, historic preservation of the buildings and the quality of life of the neighbors are two aspects of development that are often overlooked. Dereck Mangus reflects on his experience in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore, when an antebellum building is destroyed — all but the facade — to make way for a tall, modern, mixed-use building.
